About the Border Terrier

The Border Terrier is a delightful breed that boasts a rich history as a working dog in the border regions of England and Scotland, originally bred to hunt foxes and other small game. This medium-sized companion is perfect for families and individuals alike, known for their affectionate nature and strong bonds with their humans. With a temperament that combines intelligence and playfulness, they make excellent family pets, especially for those with young children. Their friendly disposition enables them to get along well with other dogs and even cats, making them a wonderful addition to a bustling household.

When it comes to energy, the Border Terrier strikes a great balance, enjoying playtime and outdoor activities while also being content to relax at home. Their moderate energy level means that regular exercise, like daily walks and some spirited play, will keep them happy and healthy. With a grooming frequency of just once a week, their wiry coat sheds minimally, making them suitable for apartments and homes alike. While they do enjoy a good romp, they are also adaptable enough to thrive in smaller spaces, as long as they receive adequate mental and physical stimulation.

Eager to please, Border Terriers are quite trainable and respond well to positive reinforcement methods. Their intelligence shines through in their willingness to learn, making them ideal for novice and experienced dog owners. This breed’s mild but consistent barking tendency means you will have a loyal watchdog without excessive noise, further enhancing their appeal. If you’re considering welcoming a Border Terrier into your family, you’ll soon discover a devoted, lively, and endearingly affectionate companion who will fill your life with joy. Living with a Border Terrier

History

The name of this dog breed was changed to border terrier in the 1800s. They were originally bred in the border country between England and Scotland to control vermin. It was however realized much later that they could bolt foxes and also chase down horses. They were recognized by the Kennel Club of the UK in 1920 while the American Kennel Club followed suit in 1930.

Temperament

A border terrier is what you would call a home dog. It has an incredible will to please and this means they are easy to train too. They are very affectionate and would love to cuddle up with you on the sofa after a stressful day.

They enjoy chasing and hunting. They are very intelligent and friendly and enjoy the company of other dogs. They will, however, chase down every other creature they come across. They are of good behavior but will require training.

Environment

A border terrier is the example of an apartment dog. If you are likely to be away most of the day, you should get a border terrier. Just be sure to give him adequate time and attention when you return. They are also suitable playmates for children as they thrive on companionship.

They need an environment that affords them enough playtime and adequate social exposure. Be sure to socialize them from when they are puppies so they get used to having people around. You would need to terrier proof your home because they seem to bite on anything that can be eaten.

Exercise

This dog breed is indeed high energy and will require a moderate level of exercise daily. It does not have to be mind-bugging or special features. A 30-minute walk or playtime in the backyard should do the trick.

They just need to be kept active and played with so they do not become lonely. You could just let them roam or run around in a fenced yard. This dog breed needs exercise from a very young age and this should not be ignored. Give them a lot of toys they can nibble on so they don’t go thrashing the house.

Grooming

Grooming for a border terrier is no more than the regular. Their coats need to be brushed 2 to 3 times a week and they should be given regular baths. They do not need daily baths and should keep clean for the most part unless they get into something really dirty.

You should check their ears regularly so you could clean them and avoid buildup. They shed and this is no surprise so you should wash their bedding regularly and vacuum the house to get rid of their fur. They are overall an easy breed to groom.

Our Border Terrier puppies for sale come from either USDA licensed commercial breeders or hobby breeders with no more than 5 breeding mothers. USDA licensed commercial breeders account for less than 20% of all breeders in the country.

The unregulated breeders who are selling outside of the USDA regulations and without a license are what we consider to be “Puppy Mills.” We are committed to offering Border Terrier puppies who will grow up to become important members of your family. We only purchase puppies from the very best sources, and we stand behind every puppy we sell.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Border Terriers need so much exercise?

This would depend on the age of the dog and its size. Naturally, they love to be out and running or playing so this should be encouraged. The American Kennel club states an average of an hour a day.

Can Border Terriers be classified as lap dogs?

Border terriers are generally very active and playful and very sensitive too. They are affectionate and it may be a problem to keep them off your lap or sofa. They really do not need an invitation.

Are Border Terriers easy to train?

Yes. They are very willing to be part of the home and so they are willing to please.

At what point is a Border Terriers grown?

Seeing that they are small dogs, they will stand at about 15 inches but will be fully grown at 12 to 18 months.

Can Border Terriers be good family pets?

The answer is yes. They are incredibly in love with children and will get along with other dogs and even cats if they’re brought up together. They are willing to become part of the family.

What diseases are Border Terriers prone to?

The border terrier could get the spike’s disease which is more like canine epilepsy or hip dysplasia which may cause arthritis or progressive retinal atrophy where they slowly become blind.

Are Border Terriers aggressive?

Not necessarily. They do not show aggression to other dogs or even people. But they will chase small fleeing creatures if given the chance.

How long should Border Terriers be exercised?

If you take a border terrier on a walk, they will go all day and probably wear you out. They are very active dogs who love to play so stick to 30 to 45 minutes every day. You could decide to walk them or even play fetch.

Do Border Terriers need to be striped?

Yes. Typically they would need to be stripped twice yearly when they become blown or their fur starts to part. Each dog is different though.

How often should you bathe a Border Terriers?

This would naturally depend on how much time your dog spends outside. You could keep it at once a week but if you feel he spends a lot of time playing or running outside, then, by all means, you could increase it.

The border terrier is the ideal family pet and you would absolutely love this cute canine.

I had been looking for months for a english bulldog with no luck unfortunately. As I was online I found this place. I was browsing through their pictures of available animals and applied to meet a dachshund puppy The next morning David called me to set up an appointment to meet her, he was super friendly and helpful. My family and I decided to go to Fairfield Petland and meet the puppy. As we were there looking at all the animals we saw a 13 week old female bulldog. Lisa the manger saw us looking at her and asked if we would like to meet her, of course we said yes. Celeste another wonderful employee went and got her and set us up in a room and we fell inlove instantly!!! Celeste, Lisa, David were truly gems they explained everything that they offer explain everything about the puppy even showed us for generations of her family, all vet records, and so much more!! Needless to say Nova is the new addition to our family we absolutely love her much and couldn't be happier!!! Thank you so much Petland and thank you again to the three wonderful individuals( Lisa, Celeste, David) that made our family whole with our new fur baby!!! ❤️ 🐶❤️🐾

I had visited shelter after shelter looking for a small dog to adopt. No luck. I visited Petland with no intention of purchasing. Youseff greeted me and at first, I was rather standoffish with him expecting a sales pitch, etc. He read me immediately and knew not to push it. He kept me interested and asked the right questions and told me the important aspects of adopting from Petland. Youseff is the diamond in the rough! He was very kind, understanding, patient, and all around a great person! If every retail location could have a young man like Youseff, they’d be dang LUCKY! Keep the great attitude, kid!!! You’re awesome at what you do!!! Cocoa and I thank you and commend you!

A massive thank you to Lisa and David! After a terrible experience at a nearby bird store, I arrived at Pet Land in low spirits but by the end of our visit I couldn't have been happier. My grandmother was looking to purchase a new bird and had a few questions about what she should be taking home. Lisa was extremely helpful in the process of helping her not only pick a bird that would be good for the companionship she was looking for but also took the time to help her pick toys, bedding, food, and anything else she needed. While Lisa was helping my grandmother, David was so kind in helping get me the information I needed to help her get her new friend set up. We had a fairly large purchase that would not fit in my car and David not only went out of his way to help me attempt to get everything loaded but when it didn't work he took the time to walk me through how to rebuild our new bird cage and then took everything apart and loaded it up. One thing that stood out to me was that as I was outside loading the car Lisa had noticed my grandmother looking a little tired and went out of her way to go get her a chair so she could rest while waiting. Happy to say the bird is doing well in its new home and we all could not be thankful enough for the kind service provided by Lisa and David!

When we stopped in a week ago we had just lost 2 of our guinea pigs we had gotten from 2 other petlands in a couple of months. Celeste came over and asked if we had an questions and when I told her what happened she went and got Lisa. Lisa started asking us a bunch of questions and come to find out we weren't told everything or were mislead when we got our other 2. They have a program that if you do will guarantee your guinea pigs for up to 6 months instead of the normal 7 days. I think the other 2 petlands were trying to make a quick sale. Lisa gave us so much info that we ended up buying 2 male guinea pigs. Lisa and Celeste were so helpful! Plus they work with a local small animal vet that will give you your pets first visit free if you buy from this petland! Go in and see Lisa and Celeste for all your pet needs! Thank you again!

I drove an hour and a half for their last two bunnies and they reserved them for me. Lisa and Ellen were amazing and super helpful about getting me not only the bunnies, but the supplies for them as well. My family feels complete with these two lovely bunnies.
