About the Chow Chow

The Chow Chow, known for its distinctive lion-like appearance and unique blue-black tongue, has a fascinating history that dates back to ancient China, where it was originally bred for various roles including hunting and guarding. This medium-sized breed has a strong, dignified presence and a reserved temperament, making them suitable for families who appreciate a steady and loyal companion. While they can form strong bonds with their human families, Chow Chows tend to be more independent than some other breeds, which may mean they are not always eager to socialize with young children or other pets.

Despite their calm demeanor at home, Chow Chows do require regular exercise to stay healthy. They thrive in environments where they can enjoy walks and playtime, yet their relatively moderate energy level makes them adaptable to apartment living, as long as their daily activity needs are met. Grooming these fluffy companions is essential, as they have a thick double coat that sheds more than average, necessitating weekly brushing to maintain their coat and keep loose fur under control.

When it comes to training, Chow Chows can be a bit of a challenge. They tend to be independent thinkers, which can lead to stubbornness. However, with consistent and positive reinforcement methods, their intelligence can shine through. While they may not always welcome strangers with open paws, they tend to be loyal and affectionate to their family members, offering a sense of security and companionship. If you are considering bringing a Chow Chow into your home, make sure you’re ready for a devoted friend with a personality as distinctive as their fluffy appearance.

Living with a Chow Chow

History of Breed

The Chow Chow dog breed originated in China and is known to date to the Han dynasty (206 bc–ad 220). This breed of dog is believed by many to be one of the oldest of all breeds and is genetically very similar to the wolf. The name “Chow Chow” derived from an English term used in the 19th century to refer to cargo from the Orient. This breed has remained a very well-liked breed for generations around the world.

Personality and Temperament

This breed is a very upbeat and energetic breed that enjoys the company if his family. They are also loyal and at times protective. They enjoy socializing with other dogs and quickly form a bond with their family. The Chow Chow does tend to train easily and loves the attention he receives after mastering a new trick. They have approachable demeanors and all-around very good personalities.

Appearance and Grooming

Chow Chows require daily and thorough brushing. Many find that using a large slicker brush, a pin brush and a metal comb work well in keeping their thick and luxurious coats looking great. Using the slicker brush to thoroughly brush your Chow Chow's legs is also important. Routine nail clipping will help this pup feel his and look his best.

Care and Feeding

Chow Chows are relatively active dogs and do need ample amounts of energy to feel their best. The correct ratio of meat-based protein and micronutrients, as well as healthy carbs and fats, will keep this breed healthy. Many Chow Chow owners recommend feeding this dog two meals a day, spaced about twelve hours apart. It is also very important to remember to provide your dog with proper dental care. Frequently Asked Questions

Are Chows suitable for first-time dog owners?

No. They grow up to be quite independent and strong dogs and they are no mean feat for a first-time dog owner.

Do Chows have prey drive?

Chows are known to be hunting dogs and as such tend to chase anything smaller. They have a high prey drive even in domestic environments.

Are Chows playful?

Chows are playful in a different way. They are not given to the classic fetch game and they take longer to respond to things.

Can Chows adapt to apartment living?

No. They are more suitable for homes which have a back garden so they get to express themselves. They really don’t do well in apartments.

Can Chows be left alone?

They develop separation anxiety when they are left alone for long periods of time. They are suitable for people who work from home.

Do Chows bark excessively?

No. They will only bark to alert their owners and are not known to be barkers just for the fun of it.

Do Chows like water?

No. They do not. Their coats alone could pull them down when wet.

Are Chows good watchdogs?

Yes, they are.

Why are Chows aggressive?

They are naturally hunting dogs and tend to be aggressive with other dogs of the same sex or cats. If not checked, it could be an issue in adulthood.

Do Chows like to cuddle?

No. They prefer some level of self-autonomy and are very independent. They do not love to snuggle or cuddle.

If you are not much of a hugger or a cuddly person, this is the perfect dog for you because, despite their looks, they do love their space.

I had been looking for months for a english bulldog with no luck unfortunately. As I was online I found this place. I was browsing through their pictures of available animals and applied to meet a dachshund puppy The next morning David called me to set up an appointment to meet her, he was super friendly and helpful. My family and I decided to go to Fairfield Petland and meet the puppy. As we were there looking at all the animals we saw a 13 week old female bulldog. Lisa the manger saw us looking at her and asked if we would like to meet her, of course we said yes. Celeste another wonderful employee went and got her and set us up in a room and we fell inlove instantly!!! Celeste, Lisa, David were truly gems they explained everything that they offer explain everything about the puppy even showed us for generations of her family, all vet records, and so much more!! Needless to say Nova is the new addition to our family we absolutely love her much and couldn't be happier!!! Thank you so much Petland and thank you again to the three wonderful individuals( Lisa, Celeste, David) that made our family whole with our new fur baby!!! ❤️ 🐶❤️🐾

I had visited shelter after shelter looking for a small dog to adopt. No luck. I visited Petland with no intention of purchasing. Youseff greeted me and at first, I was rather standoffish with him expecting a sales pitch, etc. He read me immediately and knew not to push it. He kept me interested and asked the right questions and told me the important aspects of adopting from Petland. Youseff is the diamond in the rough! He was very kind, understanding, patient, and all around a great person! If every retail location could have a young man like Youseff, they’d be dang LUCKY! Keep the great attitude, kid!!! You’re awesome at what you do!!! Cocoa and I thank you and commend you!

A massive thank you to Lisa and David! After a terrible experience at a nearby bird store, I arrived at Pet Land in low spirits but by the end of our visit I couldn't have been happier. My grandmother was looking to purchase a new bird and had a few questions about what she should be taking home. Lisa was extremely helpful in the process of helping her not only pick a bird that would be good for the companionship she was looking for but also took the time to help her pick toys, bedding, food, and anything else she needed. While Lisa was helping my grandmother, David was so kind in helping get me the information I needed to help her get her new friend set up. We had a fairly large purchase that would not fit in my car and David not only went out of his way to help me attempt to get everything loaded but when it didn't work he took the time to walk me through how to rebuild our new bird cage and then took everything apart and loaded it up. One thing that stood out to me was that as I was outside loading the car Lisa had noticed my grandmother looking a little tired and went out of her way to go get her a chair so she could rest while waiting. Happy to say the bird is doing well in its new home and we all could not be thankful enough for the kind service provided by Lisa and David!

When we stopped in a week ago we had just lost 2 of our guinea pigs we had gotten from 2 other petlands in a couple of months. Celeste came over and asked if we had an questions and when I told her what happened she went and got Lisa. Lisa started asking us a bunch of questions and come to find out we weren't told everything or were mislead when we got our other 2. They have a program that if you do will guarantee your guinea pigs for up to 6 months instead of the normal 7 days. I think the other 2 petlands were trying to make a quick sale. Lisa gave us so much info that we ended up buying 2 male guinea pigs. Lisa and Celeste were so helpful! Plus they work with a local small animal vet that will give you your pets first visit free if you buy from this petland! Go in and see Lisa and Celeste for all your pet needs! Thank you again!

I drove an hour and a half for their last two bunnies and they reserved them for me. Lisa and Ellen were amazing and super helpful about getting me not only the bunnies, but the supplies for them as well. My family feels complete with these two lovely bunnies.
