About the Bloodhound

The Bloodhound, known for its remarkable tracking ability and signature droopy ears, has a fascinating history that dates back to the Middle Ages when these noble hounds were revered for their incredible sense of smell. As a family pet, a Bloodhound can fit beautifully into a loving household, thriving on companionship and affection. With a temperament that is generally gentle and friendly, these dogs often do well with young children and other pets, making them an excellent choice for families seeking a loyal and sociable companion.

Despite their medium size, Bloodhounds have a moderate energy level, which means they enjoy regular exercise such as daily walks and playful outings but are equally content to relax at home with their loved ones. While they are not the most apartment-friendly breed due to their moderate barking tendency, they flourish in environments where they can regularly engage with family members. With grooming needs that require weekly attention to their coat and a shedding level that falls within a moderate range, keeping your Bloodhound looking good is an achievable task.

In terms of trainability, Bloodhounds are intelligent dogs but can exhibit a stubborn streak, which makes consistent training techniques essential. With patience and positive reinforcement, they can learn a variety of commands and tricks. If you’re looking to welcome a Bloodhound into your family, you’ll find a devoted and affectionate friend, ready to join you on life’s adventures. When seeking a Bloodhound in Petland Fairfield, Ohio, you may just discover your new best friend waiting for you.

Living with a Bloodhound

History

Though the bloodhound is a breed of canines that hunts from just scent, it’s name is definitely not evidence of its taste for blood. The bloodhound is typically a royal dog, its name speaks of the fact that it is blooded.

It was used to track and hunt thieves as far back as the 16th century and this is still happening now. When its reputation diminished as a result of the Civil War, some Americans took it upon themselves to breed them again and this produced dogs you would love to keep as pets.

It is mostly used by law enforcement for manhunt, searches, and rescue operations. It is a unique breed and is ranked 45th on a list of 155 breeds in the American Kennel Club.

Temperament

Some behaviors of the bloodhound could be contradictory and you’d need an enormous amount of patience to figure them out. They could be very affectionate but also shy especially around people they are not accustomed to.

They are intelligent enough to be trained and could be sensitive to corrections but they still would want to do things in their own way. When they are excited, they could get very vocal and do a lot of barking however some others are just quiet and very peaceful.

Social structures affect their temperaments greatly. When they’re young, you would do your bloodhound a world of good to expose them to people, sights, and places so they get accustomed to all of these.

Environment

This dog breed is in love with children. They are generally very excited when they get to play with children and this should be encouraged. You know they are really big dogs so be sure to supervise any contact with babies. Older children shouldn’t have any issues playing with a bloodhound.

You should also have a yard where they could play because they tend to become lonely if left unattended. They do well with other dogs and even cats.

Exercise

A big dog such as a bloodhound needs all the exercise it can get. Typically, they love to run for miles following a trail and you’d need to keep that up. They are great running buddies and if you live in the country, they may just be the perfect pet for you.

However, you should be sure not to over-exercise them. The underlying rule is to add 5 minutes to their exercise time per growth month. So, if they’re 3 months they should do 15 minutes, 4 months should do 20 minutes. Be sure to understand how they react or behave when they’re tired.

Grooming

Grooming a bloodhound would include bathing and brushing his coat on a regular basis. The most tasking part about grooming is the care for its ears. They are prone to ear infections and you would need to clean their ears on a regular basis to avoid this.

If you don’t have the time, make regular appointments with a Groomer. You should also clean its wrinkles daily and its flaws after every meal to take out any food that may be trapped in there. Oh, and don’t forget to brush its teeth regularly to avoid bad breath and gum decay. Cut its nails and keep them clean too.

Our Bloodhound puppies for sale come from either USDA licensed commercial breeders or hobby breeders with no more than 5 breeding mothers. USDA licensed commercial breeders account for less than 20% of all breeders in the country.

The unregulated breeders who are selling outside of the USDA regulations and without a license are what we consider to be “Puppy Mills.” We are committed to offering Bloodhound puppies who will grow up to become important members of your family. We only purchase puppies from the very best sources, and we stand behind every puppy we sell.

I had been looking for months for a english bulldog with no luck unfortunately. As I was online I found this place. I was browsing through their pictures of available animals and applied to meet a dachshund puppy The next morning David called me to set up an appointment to meet her, he was super friendly and helpful. My family and I decided to go to Fairfield Petland and meet the puppy. As we were there looking at all the animals we saw a 13 week old female bulldog. Lisa the manger saw us looking at her and asked if we would like to meet her, of course we said yes. Celeste another wonderful employee went and got her and set us up in a room and we fell inlove instantly!!! Celeste, Lisa, David were truly gems they explained everything that they offer explain everything about the puppy even showed us for generations of her family, all vet records, and so much more!! Needless to say Nova is the new addition to our family we absolutely love her much and couldn't be happier!!! Thank you so much Petland and thank you again to the three wonderful individuals( Lisa, Celeste, David) that made our family whole with our new fur baby!!! ❤️ 🐶❤️🐾

I had visited shelter after shelter looking for a small dog to adopt. No luck. I visited Petland with no intention of purchasing. Youseff greeted me and at first, I was rather standoffish with him expecting a sales pitch, etc. He read me immediately and knew not to push it. He kept me interested and asked the right questions and told me the important aspects of adopting from Petland. Youseff is the diamond in the rough! He was very kind, understanding, patient, and all around a great person! If every retail location could have a young man like Youseff, they’d be dang LUCKY! Keep the great attitude, kid!!! You’re awesome at what you do!!! Cocoa and I thank you and commend you!

A massive thank you to Lisa and David! After a terrible experience at a nearby bird store, I arrived at Pet Land in low spirits but by the end of our visit I couldn't have been happier. My grandmother was looking to purchase a new bird and had a few questions about what she should be taking home. Lisa was extremely helpful in the process of helping her not only pick a bird that would be good for the companionship she was looking for but also took the time to help her pick toys, bedding, food, and anything else she needed. While Lisa was helping my grandmother, David was so kind in helping get me the information I needed to help her get her new friend set up. We had a fairly large purchase that would not fit in my car and David not only went out of his way to help me attempt to get everything loaded but when it didn't work he took the time to walk me through how to rebuild our new bird cage and then took everything apart and loaded it up. One thing that stood out to me was that as I was outside loading the car Lisa had noticed my grandmother looking a little tired and went out of her way to go get her a chair so she could rest while waiting. Happy to say the bird is doing well in its new home and we all could not be thankful enough for the kind service provided by Lisa and David!

When we stopped in a week ago we had just lost 2 of our guinea pigs we had gotten from 2 other petlands in a couple of months. Celeste came over and asked if we had an questions and when I told her what happened she went and got Lisa. Lisa started asking us a bunch of questions and come to find out we weren't told everything or were mislead when we got our other 2. They have a program that if you do will guarantee your guinea pigs for up to 6 months instead of the normal 7 days. I think the other 2 petlands were trying to make a quick sale. Lisa gave us so much info that we ended up buying 2 male guinea pigs. Lisa and Celeste were so helpful! Plus they work with a local small animal vet that will give you your pets first visit free if you buy from this petland! Go in and see Lisa and Celeste for all your pet needs! Thank you again!

I drove an hour and a half for their last two bunnies and they reserved them for me. Lisa and Ellen were amazing and super helpful about getting me not only the bunnies, but the supplies for them as well. My family feels complete with these two lovely bunnies.
